Dumbo duplex penthouse tops Brooklyn luxury’s slow start to 2026

After a busy Christmas week, Brooklyn’s luxury market started 2026 slow.  The borough saw nine contracts — five condos and four townhouses — signed from Dec. 29 to Jan. 4 for a total contract volume of $29 million, according to Compass’ weekly report of contracts for homes asking at least $2 million. Mamdani’s “rental ripoff” hearings: Get ready for show trials

A show trial is “held in public with the intention of influencing or satisfying public opinion, rather than of ensuring justice,” according to Oxford. That sounds like what Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s “rental ripoff” hearings will be. His executive order asks tenants and activists to testify about “illegal, unfair, abusive, deceptive, or unconscionable landlord practices.” He doesn’t call for testimony about unfair, abusive or unconscionable practices by tenants, although landlords have lots of horror stories. There were 175 transactions totaling $314 million recorded in New York City before 4 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 5. 🏆 Residential: The city’s priciest home sale was in the West Village. Dr. Tandra Hammer sold a 9.5-foot-wide townhouse at 75 ½ Bedford Street, which is known as the narrowest house in the Big Apple, for $4.4 million.
