In 1999, Martin Nussbaum was working at Long Island Jewish Hospital. The eldest son of Jewish parents — his dad was a cantor — Nussbaum, who’d grown up mostly in New Jersey, had done pre-med in college. But in the hospital, he saw medicine up close and personal.
